Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hi Belinda John and all other fellow clan members
I am the grandson of Belinda OBrien, daughter of Charles (O) Brien RIC. Belinda was a sister of Julia)
It is wonderful to discover some connections to the OBriens/Briens. I live in Dublin but have many family connections going back to the area in Sligo where Charles OBrien was posted.
I have found some of his service records from his time in the RIC. From what I discovered, he was born approx. 1856, joined the RIC in 1881 and was posted to Sligo. There he met my great grandmother Belinda Gillooly ( not Kilpatrick) and following their marriage in 1891 he was transferred to Mayo. This was standard practice to break any connections serving officers might have with the home area of their wives. He retired in 1911 after 30 years service and lived in Crossmolina until his death. According to their marriage register entry Charles’ father’s name was Patrick and that is where the trail went cold for me.
My grandmother always maintained she was related to Bishop O’Brien but I had no direct proof connecting them.
Hopefully we can connect and share more information. It is fascinating for me to discover the names of Charles’s brothers and some of the lineage arising from it.
I would absolutely love a copy of that photo John if you were willing to email it to me.
Best wishes
Cathal

Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hi Cathal,
Do you know where the rest of the O'Briens from Crossmolina emigrated to?
Our grandfather James(son of Charles) was the only 1 around Crossmolina to stay in the locality.
Thanks

Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hi crossm, apologies for taking so long to reply. I thought I had notifications set up but they were turned off.
I Presume you are talking about the rest of Charles O'Brien and Belinda Gillooly’s Children.
What I have is as follows:
Kathleen married a Charles Gallagher and they had 5 children. Eileen married George Mackey and they had 1 son. Both families as far as I know stayed around the general Crossmolina//Mayo area, but I will double check that. Belinda ( my grandmother) grew up in Sligo with an aunt and uncle from her mother’s side and married my grandfather there. Patrick/Paddy emigrated to America I believe and married a lady called Rose and had 2 children ( I don’t have anything else at the moment there) . Mary or May died aged 18 in 1912 from a burst appendix. Julia married Percy Mason (?) and had 2 children. Belinda an earlier poster on this forum is her granddaughter. Then James would be your grandparent. I have him as marrying Ellen O’Boyle and they had 8 children. Maybe you can fill me in on James family?
