An ancestor of mine came over from Ireland in around 1850 how can I find out what county she came from and exactly when she came. Are there any Irish census' I can look at.
Only census extant closest to that is 1901 which is available online. Those years there was massive emigration from here due to the Famine. You will find landowners and tenants names in Griffith's Valuation - on line also- which was carried ouit around 1850 around also and most Counties in Ireland are indexed for that.
Any help?
Document in US can be very helpful the 1900 and 1910 Census Reports have exact year of immigration and if they are nationalized. Petitions and actual documents can give you a precise origin within Ireland. Another way that might help is to find out where the surname has it's origin within Ireland, a google search should give you links to sites with the surnames history. Forum searches at Genealogy and Ancestry.com could prove very useful also. If your family member married in Ireland you can use the Griffith Valuations of the wife's maiden name and the husband's to see if the names are found in the same place. Unfortunately, this works best with more obscure surnames or if you know the exact given names of persons trying to be located.
