Looking for info on Patrick KEARNS, born about 1809 in Youghal, County Cork.
Patrick married around 1831 [wife unknown], and had two sons, Owen (b. 1831) and Patrick (b. 1834) His wife died, and he left Ireland with his two sons for St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. There he married Catherine BOYLE, the daughter of Timothy and Mary [BAIN] BOYLE. Catherine was born in September 1813 in Ireland.

Aloha AmyT — I hope that this message is received by you. I am new to this database. Anyway, I came upon your message about Patrick Kearns from 31/7/2018, where you mention a PATRICK KEARNS, born about 1809 in Youghal, County Cork.
I believe that this is related to my husband, Michael Carnes’ family. I found his ancestor, a Patt or Paddy KERNS, who was born in March 1834, either in Ireland or on Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Canada. I feel quite sure at this point that the surname was recorded as KERNS in Canada, and that when my husband’s Great-Grandfather Owen moved to Boston, someone changed the name to CARNES. Maybe the immigration people, I don’t know.
I think that this is the same family that you mention, though this Patrick’s son Owen was born Owen Francis Kerns, in 1853, Queens, Surrey, Prince Edward Island, Canada, then emigrated to Boston. I have found that so many Irish families named a child after someone in the earlier generation. I think that, perhaps, this is the case here. I am not sure whether Patt/Paddy Patrick KERNS died in Canada, or moved to Massachusetts, as his son did. I believe that he did move there and die there, after losing his wife, Susanna McPhillips (who may have been his second wife). If you would like to reach me via email, my address is: ***
My husband grew up south of Boston, and became a marine engineer, graduating from Mass Maritime Academy. His work took him all over the world. I met him here in Honolulu (we live in small town on the Windward side of Oahu), in 1977. We decided to settle here over 30 years ago. Michael’s DNA indicates that his ancestors came from all over County Cork. My family name was Madigan, and we made a trip to Ireland in the 90s, to meet other Madigans in the area of Askeaton and Adare. I hope that you will receive my message! Best wishes to you. Perhaps together we can patch this hole in our ancestry. I have been on Ancestry.com for about 10 years now, and am a retired librarian.
