O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hello,
I'm researching the O' Brien's of Ardcanaught. They are related to Michael O' Brien who was Bishop of Kerry from 1927? Anyone got any info? #

Reply to O'Briens of Ardcanaught, Keel, Castlemaine
John, There is a small group of us who have and are attempting to sort out the old families of Keel Parish. We do have info on the O'Briens of Ardcanaught. We also have a photo site where we store photos that we have collected from Keel and Kiltallagh. Note, my interest in this area is that my maternal grandparents James Foley Cormack O'Brien and Mary Barton came from Shanahill East and Gortaleen to Indiana.
I look forward to hearing from you in regards to your O'Briens and would be happy to send you what we have. Thanks, Mary Leinenbach, Jasper, Indiana

Bishop Ml OBrien, Ardcanacht, Keel Cemetary, Boulteens etc
I'm glad to have found this forum.
I've been interested for many years in my Kerry ancestry and only found this thread when I was researching records I found in the 1911 Irish census which has just recently come online.
I'm Brian O'Brien, my late father was Bryan O'Brien from Lissavane East. His people were originally from Boulteens or Keel. Our people were buried in Keel until my part of the family moved to Lissavane sometime before 1911.
I live in Co Mayo, Ireland and my best link to the past is my Aunt who still lives in Kerry and is in her 90s.
I know we're related to Michael O'Brien, the late Bishop, but haven't worked out what distance of cousins we are. I'm told that my grand-aunts, who had a shop in Killarney knew the Bishop personally.
I would appreciate any response.
Regards to any of my lost relatives who read this.

Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hi John,
Good to connect. Here's some of what I have: I am the granddaughter of Julia O'Brien, who was the daughter of Charles O'Brien (Brien), of Crossmolina, Co.Mayo. Charles married Belinda(?) Kilpatrick. He had approx. 7 children. I believe he died in 1936 and is buried in the local churchyard; his tombstone reads "Charles Brien", sans the "O" (dropped due to RIC regs.) He went to Mayo from Kerry as part of an RIC posting and died there in or about 1936. I understand that there were 3, possibly 4 brothers, one of whom was Bishop O'Brien. (Another of the brothers was Gerard, also RIC.) In 1976, My mother Christina (daughter of Julia) travelled to Kerry to search for the family. She met the Killarney/Castlemaine area O'Briens: at Keel House, Michael O'Brien, brother of Morgan O'Brien (Int'l Socialists, Mary O'Leary (USA), Nell Kelliher (who was a local shopkeeper). Other local relatives are the Twomey and Fuller families. (Paudie Fuller, son of Steven Fuller of 'Massacre of Ballyseedy' fame). Lots to cover, looking fw to comparing notes. PS: Your email address came up as 3***, I am a subscriber to this site.

Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Hi Belinda,
I am the Great Grandson of William B O’Brien who was a a brother of Michael and Charles. William was married to Julia((Nagle). I have a photograph of the 5 brothers and will try and put it up here in the next day or so. The house where they were born is still there but is Cowsheds now! I live in Dublin and have a holiday home on the old O’Brien farm which is now owned by John F O’Brien who lives in Chile! I will try and send on some old photos and family tree stuff I have done. I’m a subscriber here too but not sure how to attach mails etc. I work for AON in Dublin and my e mail address is on that website! My father William J will be delighted to get your information. We tried unsuccessfully to fine records of your Grandfather in the RIC museum in Dublin. We now know why! Keep in touch. John

Re: O'Briens,Ardcanaught
Season's Greetings from Canada to all of my far-flung Irish relatives!
Happy to be back online and to re-connect.
John, I had written a rather lengthy reply, only to watch it vanish into the ether when I hit "Post"! Aarrgh! Had tried to connect on Linked-In, but that, too, was unsuccessful. So having another bash at this, hoping the internet gods will allow this post. (Also posting my email address here in case this thread again goes awry - ***
My mother was quite excited to learn that I had connected with you, John. She is Christina, Charles Brien's granddaughter, now aged 80 and living here in Toronto. She has quite a lot of family info on both the Kerry and Mayo O'Briens that I had shared on here-or thought I had-before it disappeared. So it's back to the beginning...trust that it will all work next time! Will hop back on here again after the holidays. Merry Christmas to you and yours. xx
