Toole
Searching for any records relating to John Augustus Toole, born in about 1792.
Our family oral history has it that he sailed out to the Mediterranean as a midshipman in his early teens, and was landed in Zante in 1810. Records that confirm his presence on Zante include British Army and Marine records that show he was appointed Deputy Assistant Commissioner General of the Ionian Islands in 1813. We have later records of his work with Governor Sir Charles Napier on Cephalonia, and his involvement with Lord Byron in Missolonghi.
He married Contessina Barbara Quirini Stampalia in 1811. They had five children.
We have a gravestone showing death at the age of 37 in 1829, British Cemetery, Argostoli, Cephalonia, Greece.
Any information on his Irish roots would be much appreciated.
