On my Michaels wedding certificate gave his father as moses,
Michael was born between 1826/1831 according to census in england. If Moses his Father died 1864 aged 78 would mean he was between 45/50 when michael was born
Do you think siblings where older than michael? Also marriage cert gave his parents as Moses and Mary Grannell. when you found death of moses in 1864 did it name his wife as Mary? Can you direct me to Links in ireland thank you Ruth

There is a fair amount of guesswork in what follows and I do not know where John Grannell got his information about Michael Grannell and Mary Bolger. I have a short family history I received from James Grannell of Ballina Lower. John James Grannell wrote it sometime after 1972 when his mother Angela Lee died and was buried in Kilmallock. This is what he wrote about Moses Grannells;

‘The family tree of the Liverpool Grannells identifies a certain Moses Grannell as being possibly their immediate progenitor; no dates are given but it says that his son Michael was born in Ireland in 1826, emigrated to Liverpool where he married in 1848 (aged 220 and died in 1885 (aged 59). It’s possible that this Liverpool Moses was the same as the Wexford Moses/Mogue, since the year of Michael’s birth and his Irish origins fit the chronological profile of the latter’s putative children i.e. Edward, Mary and Bridget.’

There is a strong possibility that this assumption is correct. If we assume that Michael’s father Moses was still alive in 1853 then he is possibly the same Moses Grannell listed in Griffiths Valuation. From Moses Grannell’s death certificate I know that he died on the 24th December 1864 in Kilmallock. He was married and 78 years old when he died. He was an agricultural labourer. The handwriting is difficult to read and my copy of the certificate is poor, so it is difficult to say who was present at the death. I cannot tell whether it is a ‘her mark’ or ‘his mark’ obviously whoever it was could not write. But it looks like Thomas Grannell.

According to the Valuation of 1853 Moses had a house and just over three acres of land in the townland of Kilmallock (lot 3), which he rented from John Peare. John Peare was a large landowner in the area. He lived in the same townland where he leased 346 acres from the Earl of Arran. Co-incidentally his house on lot 1(a) is next to the graveyard lot 1(c). This graveyard is where the Grannells of Kilmallock are buried from as early as 1795.

And guess what the oldest Grannell in the graveyard is a Moses or Mogue (same name, sometimes called Aidan). He died on the 3rd April 1797 aged 63 and is buried with his daughter Elizabeth who died early at 17 years on the 21st September 1795. Could this possibly be the father of Moses Grannell 1786-1864, making him approx. 11 years old when his father died?

Another reason for thinking that Moses of Kilmallock is Michael’s father is the first name Moses is an extremely rare one. It is only found in counties Wexford and Leitrim. The name was passed down through the generations in certain families. My grandmother’s grandfather was also called Mogue Grannell. And in the entire valuation of Ireland published between 1848 and 1864, there is only one Moses Grannell mentioned.

Before I go Ruth do you know anything about a Mary Grannell, aged 20 (born 1831) who left Liverpool in 1851 for New York on the Martha-J Ward? Was she related to Michael or did she simply marry a Grannell, perhaps Michael brother.

Hi John, First I did go into Cantwell no luck there.
I have all the census in Lancashire for grannells in my Family 1861/71/81/91/1901.
Moses has come right down the line into the 1900s Where it was possibly unfashionable?
also James/John/Edward/Robert/Charles/Thomas.
My grandfather was THOMAS MICHAEL Grannell, his father was Thomas son of Michael
MICHAEL married MARY BULGER in L/POOL 1848 on wedding cert it says Michael
Grannells Father was MOSES GRANNELL Mother MARY,
MARY BULGER father JOHN BULGER Mother Catherine.

there are Many Mary grannells in the tree, but the one you mention I think was probably
Michaels sister.
aged 19/20 I think single (get back to you on this one)
also a Bridget Grannell single.
I have a cousin Carl Grannell who has done a lot of research on grannells and he has moses in 1786

In my l/pool digging I found Patrick Grannell wife Mary daughter Ellen earlier than 1848

I am also in touch with great grandson of Moses Grannell boirn 1850 L/Pool Michaels son,

It looks like the grannell family came to liverpool on there way to U S A or Canada in the 1840s
maybe Michael met mary on boat and they decided to stay here,
also Michael was a joiner as was his sons Moses Thomas James was on the railway a
Plate layer I think. So they all had employment here,
There are a lot of grannells in the u s a who went there before 1840s
There is also another branch in london area but majority are in liverpool in 1800s
I also have an Aiden Grannell in liverpool but he was much younger than Michael maybe a nephew? There is a John Grannell with large family who was born in ITALY but he may just have been born there Not so his father? If you can find any threads in this that you need to clarify e mail me *** Ruth

I am looking for any information about an Anastatia Grannell born about 1824 in Wexford
She married a Patrick Nolan from Waterford had three children in Wexford then the
family moved to Liverpool UK . The Wexford Children are:- James Nolan 1856,
William Nolan 1858 and Mary Nolan 1862 ( the last one is strange as they had already moved
to Liverpool Possibly they were visiting! I thank you in anticipation of your consideration.
