Re: Downes of Westmeath
Chris Downes: While doing a little further investigation on our GGrandfather I came across this forum. Pretty much everything I need to know about William Downes and family is here. I'm still going to keep searching for my Grandmother's sister Ellen (Nell). I know she married a McGrath who was into horses and had something to do with the Irish Sweepstakes (or so we heard.)Thanks for your e-mail which got me back on the track of a search which I thought was at a dead-end.....Dottie Darlington

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Eileen Downes married in 1919 Dublin (Ongoing so don’t have all exact dates) Joseph Laurence McGrath. Believed to be born in Cork Street Dublin; 1901 census 2 Tenders Lane, 1911 census 13 Rutledge Terrace; 1916 - 1920 Mountjoy Prison for his ‘activity”. Substitute minster for Labour in First Dail. The rest, as we say, is history. Died 26 March 1966. A substantial headstone in Deansgrange (No.854) Eileen died 12 July 1962 Cabinteely House. Six children. ***If you wish to email ray1946, Subscribe and use the Private Message (PM) links

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Yes, Eileen (although spelt Aileen on her marriage certificate) was one of the four children of James Downes and Jane Mayne. Aileen and Joe McGrath were married at Dolphins Barn, Dublin on 20th Feb 1919. Joe was still at 13 Rutledge Terrace at the time of his marriage. Interestingly, both signed their names on the Marriage Certificate in their native Irish. By all accounts Joe, a good friend of Michael Collins, a quite a rogue. He set up the Irish Sweeps, re-invigorated Waterford Crystal and became, by most accounts, the richest man in Ireland at the time. His other activities are best not mentioned on this forum.
Ray1946 – I only know of five of their children – Seamus, Patrick, Mary, Bridget and Joseph. Who was the sixth?
