have you tried, online, Griffiths Valuation,for address/part or any part of Carrick? That could link you back to some of John's family, father, siblings in the mid 1800s in Carrick. From there, or if that fails, try the 1901 census to find possibly some of his ancestors in Carrick.
Also try the old fashioned way - check the telephone listings for the family name in Carrick and, if that fails to yield, try the phone listings - go to Eircom on line/site-for the County of Tipperary and cold call the first familiar sounding first name. The Tipperary library staff in Cashel are very knowledgeable on local names or may be able to point you in a direction
