Toole
I am searching for any records relating to John Augustus Toole, born about 1792.
Our family oral history has it that he sailed out to the Mediterranean as a midshipman, leaving Britain in his early teens, and was landed in Zante in 1810. He was married there in 1811, to Contessa Barbara Quirini Stampalia, of the family of Quirini Doges of Venice. We conclude, therefore, that he must have been of officer class.
Our first British records that confirm his landing and actions in Zante are British Army and Marine records that show he was appointed Deputy Assistant Commissioner General of the Ionian Islands in 1813. We have a gravestone showing death at the age of 37 in 1829, British Cemetery, Argostoli, Cephalonia, Greece.
Any information on his Irish roots would be appreciated.
