Lavelle help please!!
Hi,
I have been looking in the Griffith's for my ancester Thomas Lavelle b abt 1847 and he doesn't appear. I know very little of him except that he ended up in Sheffield, Yorkshire, was Roman Catholic and married a local girl Alice? but can't find a marriage cert at the moment. He had a sister named ann b abt 1846 who also married in Sheffield but to an Irish man named Michael Carroll of Longford.
Has anyone any idea whereabouts I could look to get more information? Thanks.
Jo :)

Lavelle
This may not help but through searching my own ancestry it became very apparent that the name Lavelle is very much common in Co.Mayo ireland. (in particular, parts of Achill Island in mayo)
Happy hunting....

Re: Thomas Lavelle
Hi Jo,
You might find the name spelled differently in different records and censuses. For example, Ann Levell married Michael Carroll in Sept. 1862. The GRO reference is: Sheffield, Vol. 9c, page 513. They appear on the 1871 census at 50 Allen Street, Sheffield, with 5 children. If you think this is Thomas's sister, you could send for the certificate and this would give you her father's name and occupation.
I can't find the marriage for Thomas and Alice, but they are on the 1881 census at No. 1 Court, Smithfield, Sheffield, with four children, Patrick 10, John 6, Mary 3 and Ellen 1. Mary Levell was born in March 1878, GRO ref: Sheffield, Vol. 9c, page 443. Ellen Levell was born in June 1880, GRO reference: Sheffield Vol. 9c, page 443. If you send for one of these certificates you can find their mother's maiden name, which will help you to find the marriage certificate.
My mother's name was Degnan and I've found the family with about five different spellings of the name.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes.
Ann

Re: Lavelle help please!!
Hi
I am also looking for Thomas Lavelle b 1847 Galway. Did you find a connection with his sister? Ann. I came across a suggestion that she was also know as Eleanore & was born in Longford abt 1846. Any suggestions would be welcome...
