Coyne & Walsh families - Clifden areas
Hi; is anyone researching the COYNE and/or WALSH families from around Clifden; any dates from about 1790-1860. I have parents Martin COYNE and Mary WALSH probably born around 1800; don't know when they married. Two sons I know - Thomas born c1820 and John Joseph born c1834. Thomas may have married someone called Biddy prior to 1850.
Family website and database at: http://www.ausgenealogy.com/RossWatsonGenealogy/ - there's a link called Ancestors that goes to the database.

Re: Coyne & Walsh families - Clifden areas
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I too have a Galway Coyne/Walsh- I am researching my 2 and 3X grandparents- Mary Walsh had a mother named Hannah or Honora Coyne- who married a man by the name of Michael Walsh.(Some of my research has pointed to the possibility that this may have been a Stephen Walsh instead of a Michael but our family Bible had Michael written down as the father of Mary)
Honora and Michael likely had many children but definitely Mary Walsh. Mary Walsh may or may not have been married to Charles Davitt- but they definitely had a child together (Irene Davitt b.1898) In the 1920 census Irene is living with a woman by the name of Barbara McMannamus or McMannus in Chicago, IL Barbara's mother is listed as Honora/Hanna Walsh and is also living with Barbara in 1920. Irene Davitt (Mary Walsh's dtr ), is listed as the Niece of Barbara, meaning that Barbara was very likely Mary Walsh's sister.
Irene was raised by her grandmother (Hannah/Honora Walsh) and it was believed that this was because Mary died soon after Irene was born.
Although the family is supposedly from Galway, there is also a possible connection to England and it is said that Mary Walsh had 2 sons who were hung by the English.
I would be curious to know if anyone out there has any information or connection with any of this information and perhaps we can collaborate
Thanks!
Tom

Re: Coyne & Walsh families - Clifden areas
my Coyne family is also from this area. Clifden is in the civil parish of Ballynakill in Galway. they lived in Townland of Tievegarriff on the southern shore of Ballynakill harbour and rented land for farming on nearby Townland of Ross. these Townlands are on the way from Clifden village to Cleggan.
my 2nd great grandparents were Taghd "Tady" Coyne and Catherine Lydon/Lyden. Tady's parents were john coyne and Ellen "Nellie" Welch (called Walsh in Ireland). Catherine's parents were Patrick and Bridget (Coyne) Lydon.
you mention the name Biddy which odd s nickname for Bridget.
my Coynes and Lydons left in 1850s to 1870 and settled in Marcellus NY near Syracuse. i just visited there in June and wad surprised that most people i met were Coyne or Lydon!

Re: Coyne & Walsh families - Clifden areas
Turns out my family (3rd great-uncle) allegedly shot and killed John and Martin Lydon. They all lived in Letterfrack. Are you related to those Lydons? I'm not sure if Patrick Walsh was guilty or not. He maintained his innocence well past his sentence and all the way up until he was hanged. I'd sure like to know what ever became of the Lydon family.
Hope to hear back!
