Was there a tradition of naming 1st and second sons after the father or grandfather and if so,what order would it be in?
I was born in the late 1950s, and was named after both grandfathers. Firstly my mother's father, then my father's father, and also an unrelated name for myself. So I actually had three names given to me at baptism! It it the third one which I use every day!
Yes, I believe I found this on an Ancestry message board-1st son after Fathers' father...2nd son after Mothers' father..3rd son after Father...4th son after Fathers' oldest brother..5th son afterFathers' 2nd oldest brothe OR Mothers' oldest brother....now, for naming daughters...1st daughter after Mothers' mother..2nd dghtr after Fathers' mother...3rd dghtr after Mother..4th dghtr after Mothers' oldest sister..5th dghtr after Mothers' second oldest sister OR Fathers' oldest sister
I was amazed how many families follow this naming pattern. It can be extremely useful tool in searching for and connecting family members. Take into patterns change if the child's grandmothers and or grandfathers have the same name. Also, I found another glitch if the grandparent preferred to go by their middle name or nickname the child maybe named after that name not a given name.
