Winters & Burns
My great great grandparents, Mary Winters and John Burns, were Belfast Catholics. They seem to me to be Protestant names, however. Mary's parents were Henry Winters and (someone) Taggart. No Gaelic names there. John's parents were (supposedly) Hugh Burns and Jane Scott. These are also supposedly totally Catholic families. Were conversions common? And was it just as common to have Catholic families whose surnames all reflected English and Scottish heritage?
Can anyone please shed some light on the nature and frequency of mixed marriage in 19th C Belfast?

winters & burns
Hi Laura,
Wondered if we could share information about the Winters and Burns connection. My husbands grandmother Margaret Willamina burns was their daughter. She married Joseph O'Malley and a great many of their descendants are now settled in New Zealand. As far as I know the family was Catholic very far back - I believe the family have all been baptised in the same Belfast catholic church for nearly 200 years. I too have got as far as Hugh Burns and Jane Scott on one side. On the other I can tell you that Mary Winters parents were Henry Winters and Mary Taggert. I would like to contact you to see where it all fits in. My father in law is 87 and knows only bits & pieces about his mother Margaret O'Malley (nee Burns)'s family.
Regards, Lisa O'Malley
