Downes of Westmeath
I'm looking for the ancestors/family of Elizabeth Downes, known as Lily, born 17 Jan 1858 in Westmeath. She married Michael Wallace in Dublin on 09 Jan 1884 at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, Rathmines, Dublin. The 1901 and 1911 census place them at Coolcronaun, Mayo, where Michael worked as a Butler and Elizabeth as a dressmaker.19/05/2014 8:24 pm

Re: Downes of Westmeath
I don't know if you've already discovered this (your post was from some time ago) but Elizabeth's parents (and sister, Josephine) are listed in the 1901 Census also at Rathmines in Dublin (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Rathmines/Armstrong_Street/1295234/)
Elizabeth's parents are William Downes and Margaret Lawless.
Josephine Downes is my great-grandmother. She married James Darlington in 1905 (they lived in Dublin as of 1911 census) and they immigrated to the US (Brooklyn, NY) in 1912 with their two children.

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Thank you very much for your reply. You're right, this is an old posting and I have already found the information I was looking for. There does seem to be some doubt about Elizabeth's surname - on some records it's recorded as Lawless, on others it's Lawlor or Lalor.
Do you know any more about Margaret Lawless? Who her parents were, where she was baptised?
I have found 8 children for William and Elizabeth: Elizabeth 1858, Daniel 1862, James 1964,Ann 1867, Margaret 1868, Agnes Catherine 1870, Madeline 1871 and of course your relative Josephine 1872.

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Regarding William Downes, b. Dublin abt 1830; I wonder if this is the same William Downes who went on to be a journalist, editor, agricultural writer (variously described) who married Margaret Lawless / Lalor / Lawlor. It's my understanding that William and Margaret had (perhaps) 11 children - the first three Joseph, Mary and Edward born in Dublin before the family moved to Westmeath.
I'm only recently joined this forum so the questions may already have been answered?

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Hi Chris.
There is no doubt it's the same person, but I didn't know about the three children, Joseph, Mary and Edward, born in Dublin. Do you have the baptism details, or details of William and Margaret's marriage? I haven't been able to find them.

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Hi Sonya,
What a speedy reply, thank you. Yes I have baptism details for joseph, Mary and Edward - they also link in through later marriage and death and burial records, also places that William lived when he was back in Dublin (post 1884) living in Harold's Cross. I'm still searching for the marriage record for William and Margaret - although I have both their death and burial records.
Very best wishes
Chris, great grandson of William and Margaret.

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Hi Chris
could you give me the dates for the three children born in Dublin please? I'd be very grateful.
I know William died in 1906 in Dublin but when did Margaret die? She doesn't appear on the 1901 Census so I presume she died before then. There is a death record for a Margaret DOWNEY in Dublin in 1875 aged 40 - is that her?

Hi Sonya,
it seems my attempt to let you know my email address was foiled by the system. I might even have to pay money to email you direct!!

Re: Downes of Westmeath
Thank you so much for the information Chris. That's filled in a few gaps on the tree. It's strange that we haven't been able to find a marriage for William Downes and Margaret Lawless, isn't it?
My connection is on my husband's side - Elizabeth Downes is his great-grandmother. As stated previously, she married Michael Wallace. If you want any information on the Wallaces, let me know.
