Bernard McGuirk
I am searching for any information on my GG Grandfather Bernard McGuirk, especially any info on his ancestors or siblings.
All I know about his life in Ireland is that he was born in County Tyrone about 1811. He married Hannah Hughes who was born somewhere in Ireland in 1823. Their 4 children were named Bernard, Cornelius, Margaret & Mary Jane.
He was convicted & imprisoned in Omagh Prison in 1848 for having stolen meat in his possession. His wife Hannah & their 4 children ended up in a work house. Bernard was transported to Tasmania as a convict in 1850 & Hannah & their children migrated to be with her sister in America as the authorities wouldn't allow them to accompany him to Tasmania.
He later married my GG Grandmother Mary Delany, also an Irish convict, as the laws in Australia at the time declared a couple separated 7 years to be considered legally divorced.

Hi Tony,
I believe your Great Great Grandfather is buried at Red Hills Cemetery Bushy Park Tasmania. He lived a productive life, he even named a local town called Moogara! He farmed in the local area. His wife was listed on his headstone as Mary. Are you a Tasmanian?

Hi Paul, thank you for your reply. Yes I live in Launceston at present but was born & grew up in Queenstown on the west coast. I visited Red Hills Cemetery last year & found & photographed the graves. My grandfather Roy McGurk, Bernard's grandson, never spoke of Bernard & Mary. I guess convicts were something to be kept quiet about back in those days. Therefore I don't really know much about their lives in Tasmania or anything about their ancestors back in Ireland.
Do you have any further information you could share? Kind Regards

Bernard and Mary Jane McGurk
I was interested to find information about Bernard McGuirk in the Tasmanian Convicts Index, Rootsweb.com, and myIrishAncestry.com. Bernard is my great-great-grandfather. All the references available to me locally (Massachusetts USA) indicate that he died in a fire in Ireland so I am very interested in knowing the true story. Hannah and their children emigrated to the US around 1850. Their youngest daughter, Mary Jane, was adopted by a family named Clay near Boston. She eventually married Lucien Amadon and they had several children, one of whom was named Clara and was my father's mother. I can provide some additional details on Hannah's life and the fate of her children if you are interested.
Sincerely,
