John Cannon – Co Galway circa 1835 - 1845
Like many other folk here, I’m trying to solve the mystery of my Cannon ancestors place of origin in Ireland. Some of my older relatives say they came from Co Mayo, while others say it was Co. Galway.
John (1807) and Ellen (1814) Cannon first appear on the UK 1851 census in Staffordshire, along with their 3 children John (1838) Patrick (1841) and Bridget (1843) and John’s brother Thomas (1821). Their family increased over the next few years with the arrival of Mary (1849), James (1850) and Edward (1857).
I have combed through the Griffiths Valuation for Cannons in both counties and have used a clever technique described by another genealogist whereby you also look for the surnames of fellow immigrants who settled close by your family. This really helps to narrow down your search for the correct townland!
From this, I have a handful of possible places and the most promising is Tuam, Co Galway. If anyone out there is searching for this family, I’d be happy to share information.
Regards
Sally

Corbit (Corbett)
Mathew Corbit (Corbett) married Mary Cain (Cane) Corbit in 1841 and had a son George Washington Corbit (Corbett) in 1852/1859.
Traveled from Ireland to Glasgow/Larne then onto to U.S.

Concannon
I have a Daniel Concannon b c1841 Leistershire, England married to a Mary Dooley b c1842. Daniel was married to Mary in Bradford, York, England 21 Apr 1864. Daniel was the son of Thomas Concannon, a hawker born in Ireland and appeared to be living in Derbyshire, England 1851. We are trying to trace Daniel's wife Mary Dooley, whom we believed came from Co Galway (most likely from around Tuam). Is it possible the families were known to each other in Ireland?
Was Cannon shortened from Concannon, as many Irish were illiterate and spelling was often confused on official documents.
Would be interested to hear from you.

Re: John Cannon – Co Galway circa 1835 - 1845
I believe my Great Great Grandfather, Frederick Thomas Lewin, inherited the Castlegrove estate, close to the Mayo border, from John Cannon.
Any interesting information gratefully received.
