I have been trying to research my Gran's Irish links (her mother Anne/Annie/Agnes died when she was 5 and her father John Cassidy disappeared shortly afterwards). I know her mother's surname was Arnott and her father was a shoemaker. Whilst we were always led to believe his name was John the only Arnott who was a shoemaker in Ireland (according to the 1901 census) seems to have been called Andrew in West Street, Bangor, Co Down. I would be grateful if anyone has any information which will help in my search.
I, too, am researching my grandfather's Irish roots. His mother's name was Margaret Arnott and she married Samuel Smyth in 1878 in Newtownards 1st Presbyterian Church. According to their marriage certif., her father's name was James and their family was from Loughries, Co. Down & they were Presbyterians. I was told that to search the Arnotts, I would also have to search the Arnolds (which is the name that I was given as a child, but couldn't find anything on). When I finally searched Arnott, I came up with their marriage certificate.
